Homes developer applies for new boat slip

Bermuda Homes for People have applied for planning approval for a new boat slip at Marginal Wharf, St. David?s.

Bermuda Homes for People spokeswoman Aideen Ratteray-Pryse said they wanted to build the new slip because the existing existing one might be blocked during the construction period.

?The intention is to erect a new boat slip to service the marine users in the western half of Marginal Wharf,? Mrs. Ratteray-Pryse said.

She said currently, marine users were using the existing boat slip on the eastern side within the project?s development area.

?We will not be able to ensure access all day during the period of construction to the eastern slipway,? she said.

The architects for the Bermuda Homes for People are Cooper & Gardner who designed 196 homes for the project. Ninety eight low cost homes will be sold to lower income Bermudians starting at around $199,000, while another 98 will be sold at market prices.

On Tuesday, revealed just 12 people had returned application forms for the lottery for the right to buy one of the budget homes even though nearly 800 people had picked up a form.

Cris Valdes Dapena, of the Property Group, said she was surprised by that response but expected it to pick up by the March 1 deadline.

Her company is marketing the 98 market price homes although she says they represent a bargain considering they amenities on offer.

The two bathroom town houses will have stainless steel applications and air conditioning.

There are still 39 two-bedroom properties left priced from $620,000 to $725,000 with the top end properties having waterfront views.

There are also 14 three-bed units left, which are priced from $750,000 to $850,000.

She said: ?You couldn?t get anything else like this now in Bermuda for under $900,000.?

She said nearly 50 percent of the homes were sold but the current restrictions on only selling to first-time buyers have hampered sales. That restriction may be lifted at some point.

Some buyers were too wealthy to qualify for the lottery for the $199,000 homes but not able to afford the 98 market priced homes, said Mrs Valdes Dapena.

The Property Group is also selling seven bungalows for seniors, five of which are one-bedroom apartments and two of which are two-bedroom apartments.
