Lobbying pushes closure of #7 Shed back to January 2008
The closure of a cargo shed to small-scale importers has been put back by four months, the Corporation of Hamilton has announced.
Number seven cargo shed on Hamilton docks is currently used for the stripping ? or unloading ? of LCLs (less than container loads).
The Corporation previously revealed the practice would cease from September 15 this year, to create room for the ever-increasing number of containers that are shipped to the cramped city docks.
However, that date has now been changed to January 15 to give people who use the shed time to make alternative arrangements.
Mayor of Hamilton Sutherland Madeiros said: ?Over the last four weeks we have convened a task force and met with various stakeholders who will be affected by the closure of the number seven shed.
?The stakeholders overwhelmingly felt that January 15 was a preferred date. The Corporation has considered this request and I am happy to announce that we have agreed to change the date to give additional preparation time and help a smooth transition for everyone this will affect.
?I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their participation and input on this matter.?
From next January, the number seven shed will be used for container storage and the LCLs will have to be stripped elsewhere.
The Corporation has said 500 containers per week arrive at the commercial docks and that putting an end to unloading there will increase safety and efficiency.
Importers who bring in full container loads, often larger businesses, normally transport them to their own premises where they do the unloading themselves.
But smaller businesses, or those importing lightweight and low-volume goods, tend to bring in LCLs, sharing containers with others.
