Alvin Flood became the Island?s second official road fatality of 2006 on Saturday morning when his bike collided with a truck on North Shore Road.

Mr. Flood was was coming down Crawl Hill in Hamilton Parish when he was involved in a collision with a stationary line of traffic on his side of the road and an oncoming truck on the opposite side.

The accident happened just west of the Esso gas station and the junction with Radnor Road at around 8.45 a.m.

Eyewitnesses said two cars coming down Crawl Hill had stopped to allow another car to pull off the road at Whitter?s Barber Shop.

The black-coloured scooter driven by Mr. Flood was following behind but did not appear to have enough time to brake and glanced off one of the stationary cars before swerving into the middle of the road where the rider struck a truck carrying concrete blocks.

A number of customers in the barber shop heard a ?bang? and went outside to see what had happened, but quickly realised there was nothing they could do for the accident victim.

One man said: ?They said his body looked lifeless.?

Another resident living nearby said it appeared the rider hadn?t noticed the cars stopping ahead of him.

The driver of one of the cars that had been in the stationary line said the bike had struck his vehicle and then gone into the truck.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said: ?The rider was travelling west on Crawl Hill and was near Radnor Road when he encountered a line of traffic stopped to allow a vehicle to turn into a business.

?The rider then made full contact with a truck travelling east and suffered serious head injuries.?

A section of the road was closed off for a number of hours and traffic in the area was diverted along Radnor Road or re-routed around Harrington Sound Road as Police accident investigators examined the scene before re-opening the road.

So far this year, two people have died on the Island?s roads.

The other victim this year was Ryan Burgess, 18, who died on Febraury 10 on Parsons Lane. His death is still being investigated by Police.

A third man, Peter Richold Sr., died on February 24 on South Shore Road, Southampton. But Police said this weekend that the 77-year-old?s death was due to a heart attack, and was not a result of his car?s collision with a bus.
