Month-long celebration of women's achievements planned for March
The Women’s Resource Centre is gearing up for a month-long event recognising and celebrating women’s achievements. In partnership with the Department of Human Affairs and the Bermuda Women’s Council, the centre has set up an “incredible” line-up of activities throughout March. They are designed to highlight women’s struggles and accomplishments, according to centre director Elaine Williams, and will be celebrated in conjuction with the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day.Corporations, schools, churches and community clubs have come on board and are hosting events including panel discussions, church services and empowerment events for women.Ms Williams said: “I am looking forward to the opportunity to celebrate women and our struggles, our accomplishments, not just how far we have come, but looking forward to the possibilities.“And I think it is important for us to understand we are not only celebrating women that have already achieved, but we want to highlight those trailblazers and grassroots women that are unsung heroes, that is very important for us to recognise.“We will be celebrating all women, Bermudian women, non-Bermudian women, women of every colour and all socio-economic statuses, women of all professions, including home makers.”Ms Williams said non-Bermudians would be an important part of the celebration and would also be embraced for their contributions to the community. She encouraged everyone to participate in a few of the events and show community spirit and solidarity for the cause.Specifics of the events will be made public in the coming weeks, but Ms Williams highlighted a few activities planned, including an official reading of the proclamation by the Premier on March 8.That same day Wesley Methodist Church on Church Street in Pembroke will be having a speaker discuss women’s issues. All month long there will be a Clothes Line Project on display featuring T-shirts designed by, or in memory of, victims of abuse. On March 10 and 17, Gateway Systems Ltd. will host a presentation on women and technology; and local, female authors will be available for a book signing on March 18.Professional business women will gather on March 19 and there will be a non-denominational church service held at the New Testament Church of God on Dundonald Street on the 20th.People are encouraged to wear purple for a fundraiser denim day on March 25 and the Family Intimacy Center will be hosting an empowerment day for women at the Fairmont Southampton Princess on March 26.On March 31, women in leadership positions will be invited to attend a panel discussion and get the opportunity to speak with successful female politicians.Ms Williams said the celebration was hard work to organise, but said all partners were excited about the ideas coming forth. She said the events were particularly relevant this year as Premier Paula Cox, a women of “fine character”, leads the country. She said women had made gains in many areas, but there was still not equal numbers of women in Government or senior management positions. Ms Williams said some of the events will address those issues. For more information or if you are an organisation that would like to host an activity in honour of International Women’s Day email wrc[AT]wrcbermuda.com or dbbradford[AT]gov.bm.Useful websites: www.internationalwomensday.org.
The Women's Resource Centre is ushering in a new wave of programmes to empower women of all races and social backgrounds for life after abuse.
Women will now have access to group sessions on self-esteem, empowerment, survival, money basics, budgeting, personal safety and self-defence.
There will also be programmes to address immigration needs, after the centre noticed a “measureable” increase in non-Bermudians suffering from relationship abuse, and an off-to-college preparation workshop for young women.
Centre director Elaine Williams said: “The Women's Resource Centre provides services for all women.
“Traditionally our services have been to provide support and protection for women in the instance of abuse, whether that be domestic violence, sexual assault etc.
“We have seen a measurable increase in non-Bermudian women that have come, feeling out our services in the past year, and as a result of this the resource centre is about to expand its services to truly become a women's resource centre where we not only respond to abuse needs but we also empower women for after-care and life after abuse.”
The centre has also partnered with the Department of Human Affairs and the Bermuda Women's Council on a month-long event celebrating women.
Starting in March, female-friendly organisations including churches, schools and community clubs will participate in the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day.
Ms Williams hopes all women on the Island will participate. “We will be celebrating all women, Bermudian women, non-Bermudian women, women of every colour and all socio-economic statuses, women of all professions, including homemakers.”
