Motorcyclist, 41, dies after striking pole
A 41-year old motorcyclist, thought to be a former Police officer, died in a single vehicle accident on North Shore Road, Devonshire last night.
The Hamilton Parish man became the second road fatality of the year after he apparently lost control of his bike about 200 metres east of the Barkers Hill roundabout as he was heading east.
Police were called to the scene around 10.30 p.m. The victim was rushed by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital but was pronounced dead soon afterwards.
The black motorcycle which the man had been riding sustained some damage after it and the rider struck a pole on the nearside of the road. North Shore Road was closed by Police as measurements and evidence were gathered at the scene. One of the items that appeared to have belonged to the victim, a large holdall shoulder bag, was carried from the scene.
No-one vehicle appears to have been involved in the accident. Traffic heading east from Pembroke was diverted away from the scene at Barkers Hill roundabout.
A Bermuda Police Service spokesman said no further information on the accident would be released until the next of kin had been informed.
Last month a 20-year-old involved in a road collision died of his injuries in hospital.
Stephen Andrew Lee, of Hamilton Parish, was travelling west on North Shore Road in that parish when his motorcycle collided with a jeep exiting Tony?s Fine Foods store.
His death was the first road fatality of 2007. Friends erected a banner in his memory near the scene of the collision. One read: ?One Love. Gonna miss you Stephen. See you in Heaven.?
Last night?s death comes in a week when Premier Ewart Brown announced that Road Safety Council chairman, Dr. Christopher Johnson, would unveil a plan to reduce the number of road deaths on the Island.
