Pokers in Paradise event called off
The host of ?World Poker Tour? will not be giving tutorials in Texas Hold Em next month as the Poker in Paradise event has been cancelled after Police informed the organisers of the law.
The event was going to be held at the Fairmont Southampton Princess in February and would have seen Mike Sexton come to the Island to give tutorials on the game. Mr. Sexton hosts the Travel Channel show and has won over $3 million in tournaments around the globe.
Yesterday a Police spokesman said: ?The Proprietors were advised of the law under the Liquor License Act 1974 and the proprietors cancelled the tournament.?
However last night a spokeswoman for the hotel insisted the tournament had only been postponed and that ?the Fairmont has not been told that anything they?re doing with the World Poker Tour Events is against the law?.
The spokeswoman added: ?Fairmont always complies with the local law. Players at the ?Poker in Paradise? Getaway Weekend Event, originally scheduled for February 8 - 11, 2007 would have been playing for prizes, and not for money.
?The event was developed for poker enthusiasts to come and enjoy the Island of Bermuda and be in the company of one of the most famous Ambassadors of the game of Poker.
?With the poker tutorials, it would have been an opportunity for those interested in the game to learn from one of the best in the industry in a fun setting.
?The event is not going ahead at this time, however, there has been significant interest and we are hoping to re-schedule it at some point in the future.?
The spokeswoman could not say why the event had been postponed or when it would be held.
Under Section 40 of the 1974 Liquor Licence Act it is an offence for any licensed premises to allow ?the playing of any unlawful game?.
