Canadian motorcyclist under intensive care

A Canadian national is under intensive care after he suffered serious head injuries in a bike accident on the weekend.

Police said the single-vehicle accident happened at 1.50 a.m. on Sunday on Sonesta Bay Road, Southampton.

The man was taken to the Intensive Care Unit at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he is said to be in serious condition.

Police said it appeared that he had been riding his livery cycle when he lost control of the vehicle.

Bottles thrown at man, 49

A 49-year-old man needed hospital treatment after bottles were thrown at him and he was assaulted by a group of unknown men. One of the men brandished a machete.

Police said the incident happened at 12.10 a.m. yesterday on the junction of Court and Dundonald Streets where a large crowd had gathered.

The victim told Police he was kicked about the body. He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was treated for a cut above the right eye, other abrasions and a swollen lip.

Witnesses should telephone the Serious Crime Unit on 299-4313.

Police report 21 weekend accidents

Police reported six weekend road crashes in which people were injured, while 15 other accidents resulted only in damage. Two people were arrested for driving while impaired.

Police said thieves were also busy over the weekend with ten house break-ins. There was one in Pembroke, two in Somerset, three in Warwick, three in Paget and one in Hamilton Parish.

Handbag snatcher targets cycle passenger

A woman's handbag was snatched while she rode pillion on a motorcycle on Sunday evening.

A Police spokesman said the male complainant, who had been riding the cycle, suffered knee injuries to his knees. The woman was unhurt.

The spokesman added the woman had heard a motorcycle riding close behind. When they slowed down near the junction of Fairylands and Pitts Bay Road, in Pembroke, the bag snatcher struck.

The couple were knocked down in the incident, which occurred at 6.40 p.m. The bag contained about $40 in cash and other personal items.

The thief was black and of medium build. He wore a dark rain suit and a white helmet.
