Policeman charged with buggery against a child

A Policeman has been bailed after being charged with five sexual offences, including buggery, against a child.

The 35-year-old man from Smith's, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was ordered to appear at Hamilton Police Station three times a week and to surrender his travel documents after being granted $20,000 bail with like surety pending another court appearance on March 13.

During yesterday's plea court session, five charges, dating between December 26 last year and January 2, 2002, were read out but he was not required to enter a plea because they are indictable matters set to be tried in front of a Supreme Court jury.

He was charged with committing a sexual assault causing actual bodily harm, touching a young person in his trust, inviting a young person in his trust to touch him, unlawful assault causing actual bodily harm by spanking and buggery.
