To our seniors, with lots of love
Students from CedarBridge Academy showed some love to the elderly this week by providing them with a pre-Valentine's Day tea.
Senior three and four students from the Island's largest public school visited Pembroke Seniors' Day Centre Home on Thursday afternoon and dished out sandwiches, cookies, cakes and soft drinks to residents of Pembroke Rest Home.
The treat was organised as part of a leadership programme pupils are involved in called Lead Bermuda. Teacher Rosemary Matthews, head of foreign languages, said: "I assist with the programme and we try to tell them a leader can't be self-centred.
"What touched me was that they were willing to sit down and talk to the senior citizens. Some of the seniors wanted to know when they were coming back. I was quite proud of the kids."
The afternoon was co-ordinated by deputy head boy Neville Vanderpool and entertainment was provided by student pianist Derek Musson, who played a selection of spirituals and songs for residents of the Parsons Road facility.
Pupils involved in CedarBridge's culinary arts catering club provided the food, along with Neville's parents.
"We had a total of about a dozen students," said Ms Matthews. "We heard recently that the home was closing so we thought it would be a nice gesture to show some love. We gave each senior a gift.
"We said that if they are still there next month we would come down and do something positive for them."
Students involved in the Lead Bermuda programme are fundraising for a trip to Washington for a leadership workshop in June. The catering club is trying to raise cash for a visit to South Carolina next month.
