UBP demands debate on electoral boundaries reform

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3: The United Bermuda Party tonight demanded that Government debates a report on electoral boundaries in the House of Assembly as soon as possible.

UBP chairman Senator Jeanne Atherden said:”We urge the Government to table and pass the Electoral Boundaries Commission report as a priority in the coming Parliamentary session.

“The report, which redraws electoral boundaries across the Island to make them more equal, was completed in February. The Speaker tabled the report in the House of Assembly in May and, at the end of June, the Government pledged to debate it before the summer recess. That did not happen.

“The report is the culmination of a constructive bipartisan effort by the Progressive Labour Party and the United Bermuda Party chaired by Dame Billie Miller of Barbados.

“We consider this to be a matter of urgency and principle given the all-party commitment to the fairest possible reflection of the people's will in the event of an election.

“The tabling and passage of the report would signal that the two parties can indeed work together in the national interest, surely something most Bermudians would like to see.”
