UBP opposes Southside move

Pensioners will suffer from plans to move the Bermuda Housing Corporation (BHC) from its central location to Southside, according to Opposition Leader .

Mr. Furbert told the House of Assembly on Monday that he was concerned about the distance seniors would have to travel to get to BHC, which will move to newly renovated office space at Southside in August.

?How many seniors are served by the Bermuda Housing Corporation?? he asked. ?How are they going to get way down there on Southside? How often does the bus run down there?

?Why would they want to take this service out of a central location to Southside??

Ministers on the other side of the the House replied that a regular bus service ? free to seniors ? operated to Southside.

Mr. Furbert spoke out after Finance Minister explained how the Government was attempting to ?rein in the appetite for expansion of Government office space in the city of Hamilton?.

Ms Cox explained Government was looking at moving more departments to Southside and the West End to reduce high rental costs.

It is also creating extra office space at the Clock Tower building in Dockyard.

?Currently Government spends in excess of $8.5 million for private sector rental accommodation,? she said, adding that as private leases expired, departments would be moved to Government-owned properties.

?Frugal and fiscally responsible are the watchwords here and one can expect that this approach will extend throughout the entire Ministry,? she added.

?One can also expect those private sector landlords will not be pleased at losing an uninterrupted supply of taxpayer cash to supplement their profits.

?But the ultimate savings to the Bermudian taxpayer override any of those concerns.?
