Warner goes to bat for young cricketing star

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner saved one of "Bermuda's heroes" from himself yesterday in Magistrates' Court. Malachi Jones, 17, pleaded guilty to failing to fasten his helmet and driving in an dangerous manner.

Jones is the youngest member of Bermuda's cricket team and could be the second youngest to ever play in the Cricket World Cup when the team heads to Trinidad next month.

Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney told court on December 20, 2006, Police saw Jones driving over 60 kph on Front Street and he proceeded to overtake three cars and pulled in front of the first causing the driver to quickly put on their brakes.

Jones was caught without his helmet fastened on September 14, 2006 and has two prior convictions for driving without due care from January 2006.

Jones said: "I need the bike for training cause I got to represent this country in cricket."

Mr. Warner stated: "You won't need a bike because you'll be in Trinidad. Eleven million dollars for the team. We can't afford to lose you, we'll have to save you from yourself. Tell Coach Logie he can come pick you up or send a taxi."

Mr. Warner fined Jones $1,000 and disqualified him from all vehicles for 12 months.
