Addict jailed for a year for stealing

A drug addict was sentenced to 12 months in prison yesterday for stealing jewellery from Astwood-Dickinson.

Stephen Mills, 42, who lives at the Salvation Army, stole $808 worth of jewellery from the store.

In court yesterday Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves read out Mills' report from the Harbour Light drug rehabilitation programme.

"The report shows that no drug rehab or non-residential drug treatment facility is appropriate for you," Mr. Greaves said.

"I can not find an alternative to incarceration for you. We expect you have problems that need to be remedied."

Mr. Greaves sentenced Mills to 12 months imprisonment with a recommendation that he be entered in a drug treatment and mental assistance programme.
