HIV cases

The total number of HIV cases reported to the Department of Health so far this year was ten. The total cumulative number of reported cases is 543.

One individual is female, nine are male.

One case is in the 20-29 age group,

Sexual activity, heterosexual or bisexual men having sex with men was reported as the risk for eight individuals. Intravenous drug use was identified as the risk factor for two individuals.

AIDS cases

The total number of AIDS cases this year which were reported were 4. The cumulative total of AIDS cases reported since 1982 is 491.

One individual was female, three were males.

One was in the 20-29 age group, one in the 40-49 age group, one in the 50-59, and one was over 60

One individual reported IV drug use as the risk factor, three reported sexual activity, either heterosexual, bisexual or men having sex with men as a risk factor.

Three people died from AIDS this year. The total number of deaths reported since 1982 is 390.

The World: Women and AIDS

•Women now make up nearly half of the 37.2 million adults aged between 15 and 49 and living with HIV.

•In sub-Saharan Africa, the worst-affected region, close to 60 percent of adults living with HIV are women - or 13.3 million. Women are more vulnerable to catching AIDS due to the physical make-up of the female genital tract.

•The steepest increases of women living with HIV is in East Asia, followed by Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

•In East Asia, there has been a 56 percent increase over the past two years, followed by Eastern Europe and Central Asia with 48 percent.
