Airport to run week-long emergency preparedness drills
If you happen to see fire trucks rushing around the Bermuda International Airport with blaring sirens don?t be alarmed ? it?s all part of the Aviation Accident Preparedness week.
Director of Civil Aviation Ian MacIntyre said the week-long training exercise aims to ensure that the Airport is able to respond to an air tragedy.
Airports worldwide are ordered to participate in an emergency simulation exercise every two years.
More than 35 employees from the Airport and other service providers will participate in the exercise ? expected to take place on the water ? on September 30. Mr. MacIntyre would not divulge other details.
?We don?t want to give it away. Otherwise, we will have everyone in the right place at the right time.?
An aircraft will not be used due to the expense involved.
Mr. MacIntyre said the exercise will begin at 8 a.m. and is due to end before the first plane arrives at 10.30 a.m.
Airport operations employees, including several from Turks and Caicos and the British Virgin Islands, will also participate in a two-day training seminar on September 27.
The seminar is run by the Air Accident Investigation Branch of the Department for Transport in the UK.
Also participating are members of the Bermuda Fire Service, Air Traffic Control, Aerodrome Fire Department, Police, Harbour Radio, Regiment and the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
