Man, 40, jailed for robbery

Joseph Moniz Lima, 40 of no fixed abode was sentenced to four years imprisonment for robbery and taking and driving a motorcar without the owner?s consent.

On March 1, 2004, Lima asked a man to take him to his house in Devonshire.

When they approached the Garden Market, Lima asked the man to turn around because he had taken a wrong turn. At that point Lima punched the man and took his car.

Puisne judge Ian Kawaley sentenced Lima to four years imprisonment for robbery and one year for taking and driving a motorcar without the owner?s consent. The sentence will be served concurrently ? meaning that he will serve four years, not five.

Before his sentencing Mr. Justice Kawaley asked the defendant if he had anything to say. Lima who has been in custody at Westgate Correctional Facility said, ?I?m innocent of these charges. All of my previous charges I pleaded guilty to?.

?I?m locked up at Westgate in maximum security for 22 hours a day for something I didn?t do?.

Mr. Justice Kawaley told Lima that this charge is in ?the lower half of the scale although it might going to the middle?.

He also encouraged Lima to take advantage of the courses available to him at Westgate so that when he comes out he can change his life.
