Assisting Police costs man $1,000

Honesty did not prove to be the best policy for Raymond Weirs when he asked Police if they wanted to search him.

For officers found crack cocaine in his possession and he was fined $1,000 in Magistrates' Court.

Weirs, 39, of Pembroke, pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared in court on Tuesday.

Crown counsel Oonagh Vaucrosson told the court that on May 17, Police on mobile patrol saw Weirs on Deepdale Road in Pembroke. He walked towards them with his hands in his pockets and asked if they wanted to search him.

He was searched and a rock was found in his back pocket.

Police asked Weirs what it was and he said: "S**t happens. If I knew it was there I would not have allowed you to search me."

The sample was analysed and found to be 0.08 grams of crack cocaine.

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves asked: "Do you have anything to say before I sentence you?"

Weirs said he had nothing to say, but duty counsel Chen Foley said: "I had a conversation with him earlier, and he has a mother, father and a wife to support."

Mr. Greaves said: "I fine you $1,000 to be paid by October 25 or 90 days in prison. If you come in here with a rock it's $1,000 and if you come in with a spliff the fine is $500. The court is consistent."
