Bermuda comes off worse in an English newspaper article pitting established destinations against upcoming rivals.

The piece in the Daily Mail travel section yesterday pits Bermuda against Barbados and describes Bermuda as “a minute island in the middle of the Atlantic with tax haven status - which means everyone, including the waiters at your hotel, will be earning more than you.

“This doesn't mean they'll actually bring you a menu, since full employment means that they can't be sacked. Oh, and you can't rent a hire car, which makes family travel a bit of a nightmare. But there's plenty of rain.”

The article rates Barbados more highly, praising stunning surfing, a rural interior and untouristy fishing villages.

Police investigate break-in

Police are investigating a break-in at a South Road, Smith's Parish home.

On Wednesday morning, Police were informed by the resident that sometime between 11 a.m. on December 1 and 10.30 a.m. on December 8 an unknown culprit had gained entry to the house.

A DVD player, CDs and unknown amount of money were taken.

In another incident, Police were called to the parking lot of the Transport Control Department on Wednesday.

Sometime after 10.45 a.m. a women parked in the parking lot and ran into the building.

When she returned shortly afterwards, someone had taken an envelope containing $1,000 from her car.

Man admits heroin possession

A 39-year-old Pembroke man pleaded guilty to charges of drug possession in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Kenneth Eugene Richardson was arrested by Police on June 29 of this year outside the Leopards Club in Hamilton at 3.56 a.m.

Senior Crown counsel Paula Tyndale told the court Police found Richardson's behaviour suspicious and he appeared to be clutching something in his hand.

When asked what he was holding, Richardson replied “nothing”.

He was subsequently searched and Police found he had been clutching 0.41 grams of diamorphine (heroin) wrapped in plastic.

Richardson told the court it was for his own personal use, adding that he has since joined a drug relapse prevention programme at St. Brendan's Hospital.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Richardson $600.

Senior appears on sexual assault charge

An 86-year-old Southampton man appeared briefly for trial in Magistrates' Court this morning on an alleged sexual assault charge.

The man had pleaded not guilty at an earlier appearance in September this year.

However, yesterday's his trial date was postponed until February 22 as the alleged victim in the case was not available for trial and bail of $2,000 was extended.

The man was represented by Elizabeth Christopher.

He cannot be named for legal reasons.

Woman denies obstructing Police

A 23-year-old woman pleaded not guilty to obstructing Police in their duties and using offensive language yesterday in Magistrates' Court.

Juanita C. Wolffe was arrested by Police on October 23 in Pembroke after allegedly shouting “stupid f***ing cops” at Police.

A trial date was set for February 4 and Wolffe was released on $1,000 bail.
