Hefty fines for uninsured, impaired motorcyclist
An uninsured motorcyclist who was caught riding in the early hours of the morning while impaired by alcohol has been disqualified from all vehicles for a year and fined a total of $1,900.
Shawn Mark Nusum, 23, of St. Luke?s Road, St. George?s appeared at Magistrates? Court and admitted having no driver?s licence, no insurance and driving while impaired by alcohol in the early hours of July 16 this year. The court heard that Police officers had seen Nusum riding a motorbike down Blue Hole Hill and across the Causeway at a speed that was considered fast for the prevailing conditions.
A Police patrol followed Nusum and noted that he appeared not to be in full control of his motorbike. The St. George?s man was eventually pulled over by Police on Cahow Way at 2.10 a.m. He told the officers he had had two drinks that night.
Nusum was arrested on suspicion of being impaired by alcohol, which was later confirmed by a breathalyser test carried out at Hamilton Police station.
For having no insurance Nusum was fined $1,000, for driving while impaired by alcohol he was fined $800 and banned from all vehicles for 12 months, and for having no driver?s licence he was fined a further $100. Nusum pleaded not guilty to a further charge of using an unlicensed bike and was ordered to reappear in court on September 1 with the relevant documents to prove the bike was licensed.
Plane diverted to Bermuda
Sun-seekers bound for Puerto Rico had an unexpected stop-off in Bermuda after the captain of their plane reported that cockpit warning instruments were giving false readings.
The American Airlines flight from Philadelphia to San Juan ? with 142 holidaymakers on board ? was diverted to Bermuda on Saturday afternoon as a result.
Airport officials confirmed the plane landed safely, although frustrated passengers were left with a seven hour delay as the aircraft was checked and repairs attempted.
American Airlines later flew in a replacement plane from New York at 9.30 p.m. and this then left for Puerto Rico
Airport manager Jim Howes said he believed one of the false warnings related to an exit door malfunction.
?The captain thought he should land as a precaution and it was sufficiently important to deplane the passengers and bring in a new plane from New York.?
