Big turnout for Roots Invitational
OVER 40 juniors and adults competed last weekend at the Sensei Roots’ 12 Invitational Shiai put on by Gladwin (Roots) Phillips at the Pembroke Sunday School.Youth kata grand champions were Princeton Bailey Jr. at novice level, Kori Jackman for the intermediates and Kent Bean in the advanced group.
In boys (six to seven years old) Jomeko Mallory won over Nicholas Vezina 6/0. For boys (nine to 12 years old) Ru-Jzarr Simmons took the gold medal 6/2 over Cole Durham.
Meanwhile Cole’s twin brother Che took third when Tasfaye Giraud withdrew from contesting the semifinal match.
Malachi Darrell took gold 2/0 over Kurt Scott for boys (14-15) division and Dorians Richardson was third. The final category of boys (17-19) saw Jon Lowe win a close 3/2 over Peter McGlashan for the bronze, while Scott Kennedy swept Kejon Fubler 5/0 for first place.
