Breaking News: Car clamping starts next week

Cars parked illegally in Hamilton car parks will be clamped and slapped with a $100 fine in a new policy coming into effect next week.

In a statement this afternoon, the Corporation of Hamilton said it wanted to warn people it will be starting a clamping policy in all City of Hamilton car parks with effect from Monday.

Mayor Sutherland Madeiros said: “There are an increasing number of cars being parked in city car parks without paying the appropriate fee.

“This practice not only erodes Corporation revenues, but parking beyond the expiry time disadvantages other motorists trying to legitimately park, particularly in short-term car parks, where parking space is often at a premium.”

The Corporation is working with Safeguard Security to monitor all car parks. Cars failing to display a current parking permit or voucher may be clamped and the motorist will be required to pay a release fee of $100 directly to Safeguard who can be contacted at 292-2626 Ext. 0 between the hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m..

Mr. Madeiros added: “This action is not one that I particularly relish, but protecting the Corporation of Hamilton's revenue stream on behalf of the taxpayers is of prime concern."
