Breaking News: Kim Swan elected as UBP leader
Kim Swan was today unveiled as the new leader of the United Bermuda Party.
He was elected during a meeting at the Elbow Beach Hotel last night with the UBP's Parliamentary group, party officers and candidates in the last election.
Mr. Swan, a former Senator, was elected to the House of Assembly at the last election, representing St. George’s West. He was unopposed in his bid to become party leader.
In a speech before his election as UBP leader, Mr. Swan told his colleagues that the UBP “will be for everybody - young and old, black and white, rich and poor. We will get out into the community. We will connect with people and start building the trust and hope that this community expects and deserves from its political leaders”.
He said his first priority as party leader would be to form a strong Opposition in the House and Senate, adding: “Bermuda needs a strong voice in Parliament to keep this government in check and to closely watch out for the interests of people and families who continue to struggle each day, whether as a result of the high costs of living, the failures in our education system or growing crime.
“We have a strong, dynamic team that brings to the people's business an excellent mix of experience and spirited new blood. As a group, I look forward to bringing our collective voice to bear on protecting and advancing the interests of the people, particularly those least able to protect themselves.
“In addition, as leader of the United Bermuda Party, we will work to bring the people of this country together, particularly after the divisive campaign waged by the Progressive Labour Party. The people of Bermuda can count on the United Bermuda Party to be a force for unity, racial equality and fairness.”
Former leader Michael Dunkley said he was pleased that Mr. Swan had stepped forward to lead the party.
“We've been through a difficult election and Kim is well-placed to move us forward to be an effective opposition and a viable government in the next election. His record in politics has always been about improving the lives of Bermudians and now he is in a position to demonstrate it to a wider audience.
“He is a man who is passionate about his politics and trying to get a fair deal for all Bermudians. He has also always been focused on breaking down racial barriers. Now, after such a divisive election, is the perfect time for him. He has my full support.”
