Butler: Local heroes deserve recognition

More schools, streets and buildings in Bermuda should be named after the Island?s heroes, a Minister said yesterday.

Community Affairs Minister Dale Butler criticised the decision to name St. George?s Secondary School after Clearwater beach.

Mr. Butler, a former principal at the school, said it was unacceptable that it was renamed Clearwater Middle School.

He said it should have been named after the school?s first principal, Albert Jackson.

He said Government had a responsibility to lead children to their Bermudian community heroes who go above the call of duty, regardless of criticism a re-naming policy might attract.

?We did not just arrive in this country,? he told the House of Assembly. ?People before us laid down their lives.?

Deputy Opposition Leader Wayne Furbert agreed that some street names should be changed. And he said Mr. Butler could rename Clearwater tomorrow if he wanted to.

Meanwhile, Mr. Butler said the ?door was still open? to the Opposition on race relations. UBP Leader Grant Gibbons, in his Reply to the Throne Speech said cross-party talks had failed because of a lack of real interest from the PLP.

But Mr. Butler blamed busy schedules on both sides of the House for talks falling through after two meetings, and indicated that they could be resurrected.
