Care unit puts donation to good use

The patients of the Continuing Care Unit (CCU) enjoyed a new tent and Regal Broil King barbecue purchased from a $4,000 donation from the Hospitals Auxiliary of Bermuda (HAB) yesterday.

First vice president and auxiliary chairman for the CCU Joy Williams said: "We are very happy to have been donated so much money.

"When I say we it's the public because of all our money comes from the businesses we run."

The money was raised from various through various fund raisers which included the Pink Cafe, the Barn and the Gift Shop.

At 11 a.m. the Alzheimer's and Related Unit (ARDU) residents met in a garden located off of the unit and sat under the newly purchased 20 x 20 white Fiesta tent while the barbecue was fired up for hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken nuggets, along with macaroni salad and watermelon.

"We have to thank the auxiliary staff. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't have the barbecue or tent . . . we would be sitting in the sun," therapy leader of activities Shekieta Watts said.

Ms Watts explained the unit had big umbrellas "but this is better".

One resident said it was "a treat to get outside".

"It's very nice to have something to occupy our minds," she said.
