The Physical Abuse Centre has submitted plans to make an addition to its women's shelter.

The addition will include nine-bedrooms for the temporarily homeless and accommodations for the resident matron.

Yesterday centre chairwoman June Augustus was hesitant to give too much information as the plans have only just been registered with the Department of Planning and have not yet been approved. In addition, fundraising cannot begin until the plans are approved.

Mrs. Augustus also could not say how much the additions would cost. However, she said that if plans are approved three or four contractors would be allowed to bid on them.

The facility currently provides rooms for 15 borders but does not have a room for the centre's matron. The additional rooms will also mean that those homeless for a short period, who frequently call on the shelter, will not have to be turned away.

Business growth

An expanding financial services company has requested permission to construct a five storey addition to contend with its growing number of employees.

Vice president of marketing Cherie Whitter of Capital G said that when the Capital G Centre opened on Reid Street in 1999 it had 27,325 square feet and 20 employees. But she noted that today the company has just more than 80 employees.

Plans have been submitted to the Planning Department for the office space to be built above the loading dock at the back of Church Street Mall (the loading dock next to Heel Sew Quick). And Ms Whitter said the proposed new structure will give the company an additional 12,189 square feet of space.

Ms Whitter also said: “The construction of the building is planned to cause minimal disruption to existing operations for the various companies (Gibbons Group of Companies) or the general public.

“The style and construction methodology will mimic the existing Capital G building.”

If planning approval is secured the building is expected to be completed and ready for occupancy within six months.

Beautiful Princess

The Fairmont Southampton Princess has requested permission from the Planning Department to continue efforts to beautify the property.

Renovations have been ongoing at both the Southampton hotel and its sister the Fairmont Hamilton Princess for more than a year.

And yesterday Fairmont Southampton Princess General Manager Norman Mastalir said that the planning application recently submitted will continue the ongoing renovations.

The application proposes over-roof and cladding of an existing warehouse and ballroom.

Mr. Mastalir explained that some of the buildings on the property have flat roofs which do not look attractive when looking down on them from the guesthouses. And the project will involve work to the exteriors of the buildings including new siding and features.

The work will ensure that the warehouse will look just as attractive as other buildings and is expected to cost more than $2 million.
