Children will receive special attention next month
The Department of Child and Family Services is encouraging everyone to participate in the United Nations recognised celebration of children "Seeing the World through the Eyes of a Child" event next month.
The event on November 20, marks the twelfth anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, said a Government spokesman.
This convention was designed to increase world awareness that children are important and valuable members of society.
The Department of Child and Family Services recommends that individuals, school and companies plan several activities leading up to this year's anniversary.
"Particular focus will be given to the plight of children and how they are being affected by the events of September 11, as well as other events that are happening around them," said a Department of Child and Family Services spokesman.
Suggested activities include reading hours at the library, child friendly displays, special activities in retail shops and children's movies.
In addition, the Department of Child and Family Services recommends that adults can do things such as taking time to listen to children while encouraging questions, encourage productive outlets for feeling such as fund-raisers or writing letters and make time for family.
"Children six to 12 are still magical thinkers but have many independent ideas and need other types of support," said the Department of Child and Family Services spokesperson.
Support includes honest answers to questions, reassurance that violence is not usually random and can be avoided, and lots of quality time with loved ones.
Support for teenagers includes providing them with something to do, rather than talk.
"They may need a project or involvement with other teens who have similar interests," said the spokesperson.
"The Department would like to ensure that children are not deprived or shortchanged of their material and emotional needs during this time.
"We ultimately want to establish networks in the community that provide a safety net for children and their families, and support their physical and psychological health so that children can grow and achieve their full potential," said the spokesman.
Those planning activities are asked to contact the Department of Child and Family Services by tomorrow, so those activities may be included in an upcoming Calendar of Activities for the Universal Day of Child on November 20: fax 232-0012 or telephone 236-0224, extension 3405.
