Even with the economic recession acting as a dark cloud over everyones' holiday celebrations, some are choosing to reach deep into their pockets in order to help those in need.

Thanks to the Bank of Bermuda Foundation, the Salvation Army received $15,000 to be used for food hampers and basic necessities for Bermuda's homeless and those in need over the holiday season.

Butterfield and Vallis also partnered with the Bank of Bermuda Foundation by providing the food and goods for the hampers at reduced cost.

"Providing food and basic necessities to individuals and families in need is a cause that must be supported and sustained not just during the Christmas season, but throughout the year," said Director and Secretary of the Bank of Bermuda Foundation, David Lang.

"We understand the challenges that charities and organisations like the Salvation Army face when it comes to funding and we hope that our contribution can ensure that these programmes remain active and inspire the public to volunteer their time toward such a vital service."

Every year, the Salvation Army hosts a special Christmas meal for the homeless, serving a full turkey dinner. Gifts containing necessities such as blankets and toiletries are also handed out to the guests.

In receiving the donation, Major Douglas Lewis, Divisional Commander of the Salvation Army extended many thanks to the Bank of Bermuda Foundation, noting that it was with the help of such donations that the Salvation Army can carry out its mission. "Once again, thanks to the generosity of the Bank of Bermuda Foundation and Butterfield and Vallis, everyone that has registered for a Christmas Hamper will receive either a turkey or a chicken. This is a significant contribution that is not taken for granted and will surely make the tradition of Christmas dinner a reality for many people."
