Coco Reefs? manager draws fire for ?blatant dishonesty?
One of the events the Department of Immigration is investigating at the Coco Reefs resort is a bizarre incident last year when Police were called after manager Andrea Jennings refused to hand over a television set to Bermuda College public relations officer Evelyn James-Barnet.
Mrs. James-Barnet wrote a letter of complaint to Coco Reefs boss John Jefferis after Ms Jennings denied knowledge of a television set loaned by the College after Hurricane Fabian which was, in fact, in her office.
Ms Jennings confirmed yesterday that she told Mrs James-Barnett she had no idea what she was talking about when asked about the TV, even though she knew it was in her office.
She said the reason for this was because she was ?following orders? from her boss.
In her letter of complaint to Mr. Jefferis, Mrs. James-Barnett said that after Ms Jennings denied knowledge of the television set, head of security Russell Richardson warned he was calling Police to recover the set.
?Within five minutes or so, Ms Jennings had summoned someone from maintenance to disconnect the television set from her room,? wrote Mrs James-Barnet.
?This was the set that she had completely denied any knowledge of. The whole scenario was witnessed by guests and staff, and quite frankly was unbelievable.
?I was at first disbelieving, then baffled, then totally baffled by the rudeness and the blatant dishonesty that was displayed by Ms Jennings.?
In a memo to the College?s former chief financial officer Ann Parsons, Mr. Richardson said he called Police to get the television set back from the room, but later told them things had been sorted out.
Mrs James-Barnett told The Royal Gazette: ?I wrote a letter (to Mr. Jefferis) and I stand by what I said in it.
?Somehow the letter I wrote got to Immigration. I didn?t send it. Immigration contacted me to tell my story, which I did.?
When asked about the incident yesterday, Ms Jennings said: ?I was instructed and when you are instructed to do something, you do it.
?What was agreed by the College management was that the lady (Mrs James-Barnett) should not have come over for it.
?I said to (general manager) Perry Robinson: ?Leave the situation alone?, that means the bosses have to talk.
?That means leave what you think is happening alone, you don?t understand. Robinson called the person at the College and said the person was in her office.
?The lady came over and I said, ?Madam, I don?t know to what you are referring? and to let the bosses talk about it, leave it alone. Let the bosses call each other and sort it out.?
When asked why she denied knowledge of the television which was in her office, Ms Jennings said: ?I was following instructions. Everyone has a boss, everyone has instructions.?
