Conflicting accounts emerge
Two witnesses of the alleged accident involving Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly Dame Jennifer Smith and an American couple have stepped forward with conflicting accounts.
Beachgoers rushed to the assistance of Ronald Carvalho and his wife Cuc Luong. The New Jersey couple said they were were thrown off their rental scooter after they were in collision with Dame Jennifer who was driving a silver convertible.
They maintain she did nothing to help them as they lay in the road suffering from the pain of their injuries.
The witnesses ? both women ? give contradictory accounts, with one saying Dame Jennifer did not get out of the car because Mr. Carvalho was screaming obscenities at the former Premier and that he had panicked when he saw the car approach.
The other witness is adamant Mr. Carvalho ? who is an experienced Harley Davidson rider ? was not speeding and confirmed the performance of the first Police officers on the scene, saying they were laughing and milling around as the couple writhed in pain.
One witness said Dame Jennifer had slowed down when she saw the Carvalhos on their moped and was not speeding along the road.
?The tourists were driving too fast on that road, all locals know that you have to drive slowly along that road, it?s not a two-lane street. When the man who was riding the bike came to where he could see the car on the road he panicked, he pulled his brakes ? the car slowed, but he slid three feet to where the car had already stopped, the car didn?t go into him,? she said.
?I think he was just thinking about a lawsuit as he was laying in the road,? she added.
The witness, who said she is not a personal supporter of Dame Jennifer but did not like to see an innocent person ?railroaded?, said Mr. Carvalho was screaming obscenities at the former Premier.
?The man was screaming ?this is a f***ing two-way lane!?,? she said. ?She just sat quietly in her vehicle, this was the reason why she didn?t get out.?
However, another eyewitness said the Carvalhos were not speeding and were cautiously making their way along the road that evening.
?They were not speeding, they were taking their time,? she said. ?One person at the scene said, they were jamming ? I immediately corrected the woman who made that statement.
?From the beach where I was, I could not tell if the car was speeding, however, I think it was a case of bad timing, they both saw each other when it was too late.?
According to the witness, Dame Jennifer did not offer any assistance and sat in the vehicle. She said she also heard the man who was travelling in the passenger seat tell Mr. Carvalho: ?You?re a big guy, you can stop crying.?
The witness added that she expressed her disgust with the statement at the scene of the accident.
?She (Dame Jennifer) did not even offer a word of condolence,? said the witness.
According to the other witness? account, the male passenger did get out of the car and offered to help but was so shocked by Mr. Carvalho?s words that he decided to move back from him.
According to the witness Mr. Carvelho?s wife Cuc, never screamed and was quiet.
?I helped her pull her arm out from under her husband ? it had been wrapped around them since she had been holding onto him while he was driving, she just sat there quietly, she never screamed. I think she was in shock.?
The other witness said she did hear Ms Luong respond to her husband?s concerns.
?She was terrified at what was going on ? can you imagine the pain and the terror of going through this ordeal in a foreign country. He kept calling out to her, ?Julie are you OK??, and she was responding.
?We didn?t know it was Jennifer Smith initially but we were in shock and disbelief that the driver of the car would not even get out and offer assistance.?
The woman said she stayed on the scene and criticised the way Police handled the case.
?They were milling around and were completely unprofessional,? she said. ?They were even laughing at one point ? one of the lady officers was taking notes but it was such a scene of confusion.?
