Crash driver refused help for daughter

A drunk driver who crashed his car into a telephone pole ? with his infant daughter inside ? fled the scene of the accident and refused to let her be taken to hospital, Police said yesterday.

Police said at around 10 a.m. on Sunday, a blue Subaru travelling east on Middle Road, lost control and crashed into a pole.

"The driver, a 31-year-old Devonshire man, left the area of the collision and was found by officers outside Whitney Institute Middle School," Police said in a release. "He refused medical attention for himself or his infant daughter (who was also in the car) from paramedics at the scene, stating they were not injured."

However, Police arrested the father on suspicion of drunk driving and took him to Hamilton Police Station where he failed a breathalyser test, it said.

Police did not reveal the age of the girl, or whether the driver was still in custody last night.
