Crockwell back in Magistrates' Cou
Senior Policeman Stuart Lee Crockwell charged with one count of stealing $35,000 from Andrew Bascome and Terry Jessie Darrell in December 2004, appeared in Magistrates? Court for mention yesterday.
Unlike Crockwell?s first appearance, there were no courtroom supporters.
Crockwell, a Detective Chief Inspector at the Bermuda Police Service, was suspended in February on two-thirds pay from his post as head of the Serious Crimes Unit pending the outcome of the trial. He appeared in court earlier this month but did not have to enter a plea because the charges are indictable.
During his first court appearance, there was dispute about the charges. The Department of Public Prosecutions gave a plea stating stealing from ?Andrew Bascome or Terry Jessie Darrell?. After Crockwell?s lawyer, Mark Pettingill objected, the charges were changed from ?or? to ??and?.
Allegedly Crockwell was given money from one of the complainants to be paid to the other. However, the complainants say the money was not paid.
Mr. Pettingill requested that the matter be adjourned to January 24 so that papers can be served. Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner agreed and adjourned the matter until January 24.
Crockwell?s $5,000 bail was extended.
