Cruise ship accident crew recovering

Three of the injured crewmen of cruise ship Empress of the Seas were in stable condition on a general ward at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital last night, while their ship is leaving the Island today as scheduled.

The men were rushed to hospital on Tuesday after a lifeboat evacuation exercise went horribly wrong. One man was airlifted to Boston with spinal injuries.

Three men had now been treated and released from KEMH, Police said.

"The seventh victim, a 33 year-old-man has been airlifted to a hospital near Boston, Massachusetts for medical treatment," but his condition remains unknown.

A spokesman from Meyer Shipping yesterday said that the Empress of the Seas was leaving the Island today at 4 p.m.

However Police said: "The investigation into the incident is continuing in conjunction with the Registry of Shipping, the manufacturer of the lifeboat and the manufacturer of the hoist mechanism."
