Dancing for the elderly
Salsa dancers raised money for seniors by doing a dance-a-thon at the Bermuda College two weeks ago.
The Sabor Dance School teaches Salsa dancing out of the College and one teacher, Travis Gilbert, said: “We have a great time dancing and teaching but we always want to keep a focus on the needs of the community.”
The dance school decided it wanted to adopt a charity so they chose the Pembroke Rest Home. Mr. Gilbert told The Royal Gazette: “We raised $2,601 through our dance-a-thon. We decided we wanted to deliver the cheque by taking a group of students to Pembroke Rest Home and doing a performance for the seniors while he delivered the cheque - we wanted to interact with them.”
About the school, Mr. Gilbert said: “We have a partnership with Champions Sports Bar and go to dance there every Saturday. The energy is very mature and it is a safe environment in the Salsa community.”
Mr. Gilbert has dubbed the venue for Saturday nights ‘Champions Casa de la Musica' which means in ‘House of Music' in Spanish.
In the future the dance school plans to launch a Website, www.bermudasalsa.com, where information about charitable activities will be posted along with pictures. The school was formed in September and has a number of teachers who have been teaching for many years.
Those interested in taking Salsa lessons can register at the College.
