A dangerous section of wall near the railway trail in Southampton has been removed.

It follows a joint effort by the Ministry of Works and Engineering?s highway section and the Ministry of the Environment?s Parks Department.

The retaining wall near the Southampton Post Office and Middle Road was said to pose a hazard.

?Works and Engineering are carrying out the upgrades and repairs,? a Ministry spokeswoman said.

?Once the repairs have been completed and the bank has been graded, the Parks department will do their part to landscape the area. As a note, the wall surrounds an existing railway trestle that will be preserved. The project has the approval of the National Parks Commission.?

Asked if it was dangerous to expose a slope of earth so close to a main road with showers forecast today, the spokesman added:?As for the safety of the area, the Ministry has assured that they are keeping a watchful eye on the area.?
