Detailed traffic, parking warnings announced
Spectators heading to Cup Match in Somerset have been given details about where they will ? and won?t ? be allowed to park. Police said cars would be able to park at Sandys Middle School, West End Primary School, Somerset Primary School and the Royal Naval Field. Cycles only can be left at Broome Street and parts of the Railway Trail.
Traffic Police yesterday confirmed parking will not be allowed on Somerset Road, Bob?s Valley Lane, Gilbert Lane, Cricket Lane, Hook n Ladder Lane, Scott?s Hill Road, Long Bay Lane and the Arnold?s supermarket parking lot. Officers urged drivers to use ?common sense? and obey cones and barriers in force in the area over the two-day match. They also said patrol officers would be out in force to snare speeders.
Meanwhile, Police and alcohol-abuse prevention campaigners have warned revellers about the dangers of drink driving. Superintendent Michael DeSilva said: ?The idea is not to stay inside the limit, but rather to avoid mixing drinking and driving altogether.?
He echoed that advice for boaters and urged caution with extra traffic on the ocean.
Canon James Francis, of the Centre for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention (CADA), said people should be responsible when it came to drinking and driving, and know their limits.
He denied the lack of a call for complete abstinence when driving ? as issued by Police ? might send mixed messages to the community, and said this message was unrealistic. ?You can?t take away people?s freedom,? he added, after stating that new Police figures show drink driving on the rise.
Dr. Christopher Johnson, of the Road Safety Council, added: ?Ideally we do not want people to drink and get in a car or get on a bike, but legally you can because there?s a legal limit.?
