Empress injured to sue cruise line

A crewmember of the Empress of the Sea attempts to comfort one of the first crew members plucked from the water after their lifeboat fell 60 feet from the deck of the ship during a training exercise.

A US attorney representing four of the seven victims of the Empress of the Seas' lifeboat crash said they will be taking Royal Caribbean International to court.

The men were injured when a lifeboat fell 60 feet into the sea during an evacuation drill at Dockyard on September 7.

Miami-based attorney John Hickey told The Royal Gazette yesterday: “The cruise line has exhibited an incredible lack of caring and has breached its duties toward these crewmen.

“First it causes the accident, then it refuses to pay for all of their meals and has failed to provide them prompt and adequate medical attention.

“Now, the cruise line is attempting to shuttle them home to their countries like dirt you sweep under your carpet. That is not right. We will address this in court.”

Mr. Hickey specialises in maritime law.

He is representing injured crewman Rodolpho Hooker, Nelson Calderon, Lungelo Manxiwa and Tariq Solimon.
