Farmers' market set for return

The farmers' market in Hamilton re-opens on Saturday with residents being urged to come along and buy locally grown vegetables, produce and handicrafts.

Although it is still early in the season the market will sell many items that have been produced with chemicals, including pasture-fed turkeys, chickens and eggs.

Some local vegetables that have been grown without chemicals will also be available, although buyers should check with the seller to see if the vegetables are chemical-free or not.

During the season the market will also sell fruit, seedlings, potted plants, fish, honey, jams, home-baked products and refreshments as well as home-made crafts. "Buying local produce helps protect local arable land by keeping it productive," said market manager Frances Eddy.

She said supporting local sellers enabled the Island to have a sustainable land use and reduced the amount of fuel needed to transport produce from overseas.

She added: "Produce that is grown locally and eaten soon after picking tastes better, lasts longer and is better for health.

The market is held at the Bull's Head car park on Canal Road, just north of Masters Ltd. and runs from 8 a.m. to noon. Anyone who would like to sell at the market should call Ms Eddy on 238-0059.
