Farmers vie for disused land on Frog Lane

Tenders closed this week for disused farm land on Frog Lane which was lined up as the new site for the Transport Control Department.

The plan sparked protests from farmers and now Government has lived up to its promise to return the land, opposite the National Sports Centre, to farming after it had sat idle for years.

Late last year farmers had even planned to plough the overgrown 4.5 acre site to show their impatience with allowing good land to go to waste but they finally withdraw from taking action after reassurances from Government.

Bermuda Farmers Association spokesman Tom Wadson said he had put in a bid for the land.

He said: ?I am thrilled it has finally gone out to tender but also somewhat surprised about the somewhat short notice. I hope it received a lot of bids.?

The advert appeared on August 10 with closure for tenders on August 16.

Also up for grabs at the same time was just under one acre of farm land at Orange Valley Road, Devonshire.

Mr. Wadson said the Frog Lane site would need a lot of restoration work before crops could be grown as he was unsure how much trash was buried there.

But he said it was possible to get a crop sown this year although he declined to say what he hoped to grow there.
