Fire Service hosts Island children

?When You Go Out, Blow It Out.? That is the message the Bermuda Fire Service wants to remind the public of this coming week during the 40th Fire Safety Awareness Week.

The stray flame of a single candle can set your entire house ablaze and destroy every last possession you own.

One person who knows the high toll a fire can claim is 34-year-old Mia Winters.

Ms Winters and her seven-month-old son Allan were almost consumed by a fire that ravaged their Scott?s Hill Road home because of a candle left burning by her room-mate.

Left homeless and with nothing but a few tins of baby formula, they were lucky to be alive.

The Fire Service will be focusing on fire prevention over the next week with activities which will include an extravagant, one-man show ? a must see for both schoolchildren and adults ? staged at the King Street headquarters by fire-fighter of 28 years, Arthur Raynor.

Mr. Raynor has been developing his show for ten years and will dramatically simulate a hurricane to demonstrate candle safety.

All three Fire Stations will also host tours throughout the week between 9:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. There will also be a visit from an American company called Ansul, Innovative Fire Solutions, which will demonstrate its futuristic method of fire extinguisher training using a fire simulator screen.

The Fire Service wants to focus on children.

Almost every primary and nursery school will attend the event. Last year saw an attendance of 2,000 children and adults.
