Firms failing to comply with food label law

Though the law requiring local companies to put an ingredients list on products they sell locally has been around for more than a year, many have not yet complied.

Baked goods from Pizza House, Bermuda Bakery, the Brunswick Street Bakery, the Pie Factory and Reid?s Pies (Reid?s Restaurant) have not yet complied with the law, while Just Cookies is one of the few which has.

A Pizza House manager said the Pizza House Bakery had been unable to follow the law as the Health Department had not specified any guidelines on how much information they needed. ?We haven?t heard from the Health Department,? he said.

And while he admitted Pizza House had not attempted to contact the Health Department themselves, he said they will begin listing ingredients on their labels ? once they receive Health Department guidelines. ?It will happen, I just don?t know when.?

A manager from Bermuda Bakery said the bakery was in fact in the process of complying with the law. Now that the bakery does not produce locally, he said, they have had to coordinate with the overseas producers. However that has been done and next month the public should start seeing ingredients lists on Bermuda Bakery products. ?It?s not a huge cost factor,? he added. ?It won?t hurt us that much.?

A Pie Factory manager also said the labels will not be a huge cost factor as the Pie Factory already labels their pies with the type of pie and contact numbers for the Pie Factory. However when asked when the Pie Factory was to start listing ingredients on the labels, she said it would probably not happen until the law is enforced.
