Foul play ruled out in death of former footballer

Police have ruled out foul play in the death of a local footballer who was found dead at a Hamilton construction site.

Cleveland (Clevie) Campbell 42, of Warwick, was found ?lying in a non-responsive state? in a construction site on the corner of Angle Street and Brunswick Street a few minutes before 11 a.m. on Sunday, September 26.

Yesterday, Police said they had completed their investigation.

?We can now rule out foul play as a cause of death,? Police said in a statement. ?All subsequent findings as to the cause of Mr. Campbell?s death will be reported to the Coroner.?

A few days after Mr. Campbell?s death, his brother Jerome said he had been a talented footballer in his youth, who might have been as good as Shawn Goater, but he had thrown it all away on alcohol and drugs.

The last words he said to his brother on the day he died were: ?Our lives are getting short.

?There has to come a time in your life when you have to shake this thing off and do something for yourself.?

Jerome said his brother ?liked the street life all his life? but could have been one of the best midfielders in Bermuda history.

?He was one of those players that was strong with both feet,? he said. ?Some professional guys today can?t do that.?
