Freedom short-lived for alleged offender

Flanked by Immigration officers, Police, his wife and child, alleged immigration violator Anthony Shaanga Campbell was released on bail in Magistrates' Court, only to be swooped on minutes later by Narcotics officers for alleged drug offences.

In a continuation of the drama that involved Jamaican national Campbell, 23, being arrested after a surprise Police raid this weekend on his Curving Avenue, Pembroke residence, Campbell pleaded not guilty yesterday to uttering false documents.

He denied to Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves that on December 29, he tried to re-enter Bermuda by using a false passport and false airline ticket.

During arguments about bail, Crown counsel Shade Subair argued that because Campbell is a foreigner, bail should be denied - fearing that he will skip the Island.

But lawyer Larry Mussenden said that he was not aware of any area of the Constitution that denied foreign nationals the right to bail.

Mr. Mussenden also argued that Campbell would not risk "skipping the Island" because his wife and child lived here.

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves granted Campbell $1,000 bail with conditions that he surrender his travel documents and appear at Hamilton Police Station between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays.

And Mr. Greaves set down a May 2, trial date for the matter.

But after he was released, several narcotics officers cut short Campbell's new-found freedom and arrested him as part of an "ongoing investigation of an alleged conspiracy to import drugs".

During the ensuing court proceedings, Mr. Mussenden called for Police to take responsibility for a broken lock on the door of the Campbell home - which resulted from the weekend raid.

Campbell's wife Charlita Campbell had voiced outrage that the door was forced open, and could not now be locked, leaving her fearing for her safety and that of her two young children in the Curving Avenue neighbourhood.

In response, Police Supt. Larry Smith said the damage would be repaired by 9 a.m. this morning.

Campbell is expected to appear in Magistrates' Court soon for the alleged drug offences.
