Gordon-Pamplin seeks public help with human rights complaint
The Shadow Finance Minister is appealing for help to pursue a complaint against Senator David Burch?s use of the term ?house niggers? on his radio show.
Patricia Gordon-Pamplin complained to the Human Rights Commission (HRC) last summer after Sen. Burch cut off a caller on his Sunday evening Hott 107.5 FM call-in show.
The Works and Engineering and Housing Minister ? who was not a cabinet member at the time he made his remark ? appeared to be referring to black supporters of the Opposition United Bermuda Party (UBP).
Mrs. Gordon-Pamplin received a letter from the HRC last week asking her to provide further information to support her complaint and to submit it before tomorrow.
She is appealing for the caller ? known only as Mr. M. Trott ? and anyone else who listened to or took part in the radio show to contact her. She said: ?My complaint was straightforward and specific. The individual who was on the receiving end of Sen. Burch?s vitriol, a Mr. M. Trott, was covered extensively in the Press.
?M. Trott?s version of events was well articulated in that story and served to confirm the content of my complaint.
?Indeed, Sen. Burch also defended his comments in the Senate, clearly admitting that he had made such comments.
?It is difficult to know what more the HRC requires by way of ?proof?. They certainly ought to have it in their remit to request the tapes from the radio station.?
Anyone interested in speaking to Mrs. Gordon-Pamplin should call her on 335-6031 before tomorrow.
The HRC could not be contacted for comment last night.
