Govt. to build more homes
Government is planning a major building programme to address the shortage of affordable housing, it was announced yesterday.
With the election looming, the news comes a month after the United Bermuda Party (UBP) pledged to build 100 low cost houses if it wins office.
Housing Minister Senator David Burch would not reveal the numbers involved because final details had not been worked out.
But he said the construction programme would address the magnitude of the problem.
"There have been countless discussions and site visits both internally and with private sector developers to launch a major building initiative to help address the housing shortage for both the rental and sales sector," said Sen Burch. "Plans are still being developed and will shortly be ready for public discussion.
"I don't want to get into the numbers game.
"I have heard numbers from the other side (UBP). We recognise the magnitude of the problem so the solution will address that magnitude, rather than me give the numbers."
Sen Burch denied the pending announcement had anything to do with the forthcoming election.
"I have been given a responsibility and I recognise the short time I have had to accomplish it....irrespective of the fact that there is a general election.
"The staff at BHC are well aware that I say on a regular basis that I don't know how long I will be here, but that is more to do with (wanting to) sort out other problems than an impending general election."
