Govt. to consider bids for Club Med

Alex Scott

A Government committee is to look later this month at three bids to transform the closed Club Med resort in St. George's, The Royal Gazette has learned.

One bidder is understood to be hoping to create a centre for international athletes to recuperate from injury and to train, as well as a hotel component.

Acting Tourism Minister Alex Scott confirmed yesterday that Cabinet's hotel development committee will meet towards the end of the month to discuss the bids.

If the committee recommends accepting one of the proposals, it will go to Cabinet for consideration. Government has consistently said it wants to see the existing hotel knocked down and a smaller one built in its place.

The two other bidders want a mixed use for the site. One wanted a hotel and “other levels of activity,” while the other wanted a mixture of a hotel and residential units, said Mr. Scott.

“As to the timing, I'd like to say sooner rather than later because St. George's and the Island are waiting for a decision and all the proposers want it yesterday.”
