Govt. to review Workmen's Compensation Act
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 21: Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Kim Wilson today pledged to review the Workmen’s Compensation Act.
In a statement issued this afternoon, the Senator said it had been nearly 30 years since the existing payout for claims had been examined.
"The review will look at an increase to the cap on weekly periodic payments payable in circumstances where a worker is temporarily incapacitated, whether total or partial, as a result of an on-the-job injury,” she said.
“It is proposed that the 28-year-old maximum of $170 per week be changed to something more realistic and meaningful which will serve all stakeholders going forward. A formula for a new calculation and a proposal to amend the legislation will be presented to Cabinet in the coming weeks."
Sen Wilson said she informed the Bermuda Industrial Union and the Bermuda Public Services Union of the planned review in a meeting aimed at setting “the tone for industrial relations between unions, employers and the Government”.
