Have fun and lean on School Grounds Day

The theme for today's Schools Grounds Day is focused on Biodiversity Action in an effort to get everyone involved in preserving our irreplaceable plants and animals.

Organised by the Bermuda Zoological Society, schools select an area on their grounds that becomes a protected area it is then plant to attract a variety of insects and animals.

They also identify a local plant and sow the seeds to grow more.

Students and teachers walk around their school grounds cataloguing the plants and animals found and learn more about them.

"Schools Ground day is an important annual tradition at many of the Islands schools," Romelle Warner, coordinator of the BZS's Learning Through Landscapes Bermuda programme said.

"The theme changes every year and this year we are pleased to focus on `Biodiversity Action'.

"We chose the theme to support BZS's ongoing effort to get everyone involved in preserving our precious, irreplaceable plants and animals."

Mrs. Warner helps teacher to incorporate learning about Bermuda's enviornment into their lesson plans throughout the school year, by linking nature to math, history and language. She also secures public and private support for improvements to school grounds.

Schools that have announced what they are doing are:

St. David's Primary - Planting two trees to replace two that were damaged in a hurricane.

East End Primary - will hold tree planting in the morning, picnic lunch and outdoor classes for the afternoon.

Lyceum Preschool will have a planting and picnic.
