Hefty fines for impaired drivers

Wild nights of partying cost five drunk drivers a total of $5,000 in fines and a total of six years off the road in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Drunk driving saw one driver overturn his jeep while another one wrapped his bike around a pole. Ross Middleton, 28, of Mount Royal Apartments on Middle Road in Paget was involved in an accident on South Road, on August 17.

Middleton was found to have more than two times the legal limit of alcohol in his system with a breathalyser sample of 197 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrames of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

He admitted drinking at Coral Beach Club. Ms Subair told the court that Middleton had one previous offence of the same nature and that he was also disqualified for 12 months in December, 2000. Middleton said: "I'm sorry." Mr. Greaves said: "When I catch you a third time, I always lock you up."

He gave him 24 months off the road and a $1,000 fine to be paid yesterday or he would go to jail for 90 days.

Giles Spurling, 19, of Speakers Drive, St. George's, had overturned his jeep while driving while impaired. He had smashed through a wall in Smith's on August 1. Spurling told Police: "I'm not going to lie, I've been drinking."

He had 130 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Spurling apologised, and Mr. Greaves fined him $1,000 or 90 days in prison and he was disqualified for 12 months.

Phillipa Boardman, 18, of Clarendon Road, Hamilton Parish, and Brian Zimmerman, 22, of Century Lane, Smith's, both admitted to riding the same bike on the same night while impaired.

Ms Subair said Zimmerman was seen riding a livery cycle along Middle Road in Devonshire on August 17 with Boardman as his passenger.

They were diverted due to road works by Police and Zimmerman hit the kerb as he turned.

A few minutes later Police noticed the cycle reappear from Parson's Lane, but Boardman was riding with Zimmerman as passenger. She was unsteady and almost lost control of the cycle causing Zimmerman to jump off the bike. When Police approached they could smell alcohol.

Boardman admitted to drinking and both were taken to Hamilton Police Station where breath tests showed she had 174 milligrams in 100 millilitres of blood and he had 153 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Mr. Greaves fined the pair $1,000 each and both were disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Darren Harvey, 19, of Woodlands Road, Somerset pleaded guilty to driving while impaired on July 20.

Ms Subair told the court that Police saw Harvey riding east along Front Street in an unsteady manner. Harvey hit a pole and tried to get back on his bike. When he was stopped he could hardly put the bike on the stand.

He told Police "to be honest and mature, I am drunk" and had 158 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Mr. Greaves said: "Mr. Cockspur and Mr. Mount Gay all have their whole family in the bottle."

Harvey was fined $1,000 which he must pay by August 30 and was disqualified from driving all vehicles for 12 months.
