Hit-and-run encounter leaves mother-of-four ?disgusted?

A woman said she is appalled by the actions of an alleged hit-and-run motorist who she claims struck her car as she drove her four children home and then left the scene without even acknowledging his action.

She suspects the motorist may have been in an unfit state to drive because of the way he swung his car out of a parking lot opposite the Swinging Doors club on Court Street late on Sunday evening.

According to the woman the other car crossed to the opposite side of the road and struck the driver?s side door of her car.

?I was driving along when this silver VW Polo pulled out and hit the side of my car. The whole side was damaged and I can?t even close the car door now.

?The other car then just reversed and drove away as if nothing had happened,? said the woman from Pembroke, who asked not to be named.

?I?m appalled and disgusted because I feel he (the driver) may have been under the influence because of the way he swerved out into the road.?

Her four children were asleep in the car and fortunately were unhurt.

The woman called the Police at the time but claims she was told that officers would be delayed reaching her because there was a change over of shifts, something she also feels should not have happened.

She said officers arrived at 12.10 a.m. which was around 40 minutes after the incident.

And she said the CCTV cameras along Court Street had not captured the crash because they had been facing the opposite direction at the time.

As a result of the damage to her car the woman said she now faced difficulties transporting herself and her children around.

In a statement Bermuda Police Service said: ?In this particular case, where the road traffic collision consisted of minor damage to one vehicle and no injuries ? and the other vehicle had left the scene already ? the collision can be reported to Police over the telephone; officers do not have to attend the scene.

?Furthermore, because of the nature of the report, if officers are unable to attend immediately they will respond according to the report?s priority.?

Inquiries by Police into the incident are underway.
