Holiday ends in horror

A visitor who came to Bermuda on Friday with her husband to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary was killed when she crashed into a truck on Saturday morning.

Mother-of-three Rosemary Bigelow, 50, of Malvern, Pennsylvania was on a rental scooter when it hit a tractor trailer on Middle Road as she left Paget Plaza at 11.30 a.m.

She was rushed to hospital but pronounced dead minutes later.

Ice Queen employee Larry Burton said he saw the whole thing.

He told The Royal Gazette: “She and her husband rode into the car park, pulled over and had a conversation.

“The husband turned left and was five to six metres in front of her, she followed, gave it too much juice, jumped across the median line in the road and got hit.

“It was very sad.”

Speaking from Pennsylvania last night her mother-in-law, Nancy Bigelow, said: “She was the most wonderful person in the world - she put up with my son and that's not always easy to do.

“She was a wonderful woman and a wonderful mother, a kind and loving person. She should not have left this earth.

“It was just one of those accidents - a terrible one.”

The deceased, who worked as a teachers' aide, had three children aged 11, 14 and 17.

The couple had been staying at Marley Beach Cottages, Warwick.

Manager Lorretta Bascome said they had come 20 years ago on their honeymoon and were keen to repeat the experience.

She said: “They were so nice and happy to be here. They spent all of Friday in the pool. We were devastated to here about this. We are like a family here we are so small.

“We were so confused when we heard about it, we thought she might have broken her leg, we didn't dream the poor woman was gone.”

She said the husband, who was numb with shock, flew out Sunday afternoon while the body remained for today's autopsy.

“When I saw him I just gave him a big hug and when he left I gave him another big hug. Actions speak louder than words.”

The accident snagged up traffic for two hours on Saturday as Police officers gathered evidence from the scene.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines appealed for people to be calmer on the roads. He said: “We have had two deaths and one major collision within a week. It should give us, as a community, cause to re-evaluate our activities on the roads.”

Witnesses should call P.c. Shannon Lawrence on 299-4265.

Police are appealing for witnesses to a road cash on Middle Road, Smith's near Mosquito Hill at 8.30 p.m. on Friday which put a 30-year-old Devonshire man in critical condition in intensive care. Witnesses should call P.c. George on 297-1122.

Police are also continuing to appeal for information about the fatal road crash which claimed the life of Derek Caines junior at 6 a.m. last Saturday. Mr. Caines is thought to to have been travelling west on North Shore Road near Loyal Hill in his grey Daihatsu Charade when it collided with a wall before 6 a.m.

Police Spokesman Dwayne Caines said: “We are especially interested in speaking with a taxi driver who dropped off a young male in the Mission Lane area around 3.50 a.m. that day.

“We would also like to talk with a female friend, possibly from the Loyal Hill, Devonshire area who may have been out with him earlier Friday evening or friends of Derek Caines who saw him on Friday night.”

Anyone with information is asked to call P.c. Jeana Godfrey on 299-4302.
